ACNE

Acne is a chronic inflammatory disease of pilosebaceous units (hair follicle and oil gland). It is a common disorder that affects a high proportion of the population. Acne can have a negative impact on the psyche of the suffer due to its effect on their body image.

In acne there is an abnormality of keratinisation. Keratin is a protein that coats the skin. Follicles affected by acne have abnormally high keratin and sebum (oil) production, which blocks the pore and leads to formation of blackheads (comedones). The comedones often become infected with bacteria, proprionibacterium acnes.
